Meet The Artist - Kathy Fung

Kathy Fung, Tulips Artist, tulip scented beeswax candles,

Hi Kathy! It’s nice to meet you here. Can you tell us where you are from? How long have you been painting?
I was born and raised in Hong Kong. I have interest on painting since I was small. I picked up this interest again around 10 years ago and I become a contemporary Chinese ink artist now.

How would you describe your painting style?
I set no restrictions and limitations on my creative concepts. Through my paint, I want to bring out a message that the world is full of positive energy, optimism and hope. During the time of prosperity, I would create more soft art piece to heal the mind of audiences who are living in the grasping world. In the hard time like now the world is suffering from COVID-19 and full of uncertainty, I would create more colourful and strong style of art pieces to cheer up the audiences.

What materials do you use in your painting?
I use Chinese ink painting tool including rice paper, brushes, ink and colour in my painting. Gold paper and Japanese gold ink are also my favourite painting materials.

What inspires you to paint?
Everything in this beautiful world can be an inspiration to me. It can be something like delicate flowers that I saw in a park or majestic landscapes that I visited during travels. Sunshine passing through the curtain that casted a long shadow on the wall recently inspired me to create a paint of ocean world.

We know you paint beautiful tulips, and your tulips are now featured on Carroll&Chan’s new Tulips range of candles and reed diffusers. Can you tell us about your first romantic encounter with tulips?
I will always smile when I think of tulips. : ) I spent the honeymoon in Europe with my husband ten years ago. It was a tulip season and we visited a tulip garden in Switzerland. I felt delighted and energetic in face of the enchanting bulb fields that composed of different sharp colours. We took a lot of photos in the bulb fields with cheerful smiles.

Tell us about the beautiful Tulips painting you created for Carroll&Chan and which was auctioned to raise funds for Mother’s Choice. What details are in the picture that you would like to share with us?
The painting with colourful tulips bursting into bloom is a symbol of unconditional love. In this oriental art, Chinese ink is used on the leaves while colours are used on the tulips. The painting overall is in a bright colour tone, which illustrates the real tulip colours and also the amazing power of tulips to energise people.

The picture tells a story of how tulips originated in the mountains of Asia and ended up in the low-lying Netherlands, among other places. How did you tell that story in your painting?
My painting shows the tulips growing from high to low, from left to right, in tribute to this history.

What are you working on now?
I am working with galleries on online and offline art fairs. All the time, I am keep seeking for breakthrough on art creation.

Have you held exhibitions in the past? If so, can you briefly say where and when?
I hold two exhibitions in Hong Kong. My first solo exhibition was held in PMQ, Central in Nov 2020. Recently, I finished a joint exhibition organised by a gallery in Fashion Walk, Causeway Bay.

Do you have any exhibitions in 2021?
My third exhibition was hold in Hong Kong Cultural Centre from 14 May to 16 May 2021. It was a solo exhibition.
