Meet The Artist - Shann Larsson

Shann Larsson Artist

Hi Shann! Thanks for chatting with us today. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself – where are you from and how long have you been in Hong Kong?
I arrived in Hong Kong in 1998 – prior to this I lived in Indonesia, Sweden, and Germany, where I was born.

How do you describe yourself as an artist?
I am a mixed-media artist – I work in a vast range of media depending on what it is I am trying to achieve. I would also describe myself as a multidisciplinary creative, as I do have a formally trained background in graphic design. I dabble between painting, illustration, photo-manipulation, graphics, and creative art direction.

What materials do you use, or mainly use?
In artwork be it personal or commercial I often merge both traditional and digital media. I love working analog, retaining a hand-made element while using digital media to refine the work with a contemporary clean aesthetic.

Is there an artist or artform that has been a particular inspiration for you? Please tell us about it.
My inspiration comes from multiple sources. As a creative you do pay a lot of attention to nuances in everyday experiences. It might come from words, from light, colour, nature, songs or sounds, memory or feeling etc. It can come from various cultures or foreign languages, from architecture and of course fine art itself.

What has been a career highlight for you so far?
The Red Dot Awards for two of my projects including the playing cards ‘Legends Porcelain: Chinese Zodiac Edition’, and seeing artwork developed for cosmetic brand Shiseido, released on a global scale over Chinese New Year, 2021. I love the creative conceptual process and seeing artwork in application across various media.

You designed the beautiful artwork for Carroll&Chan’s new Christmas Berries range. Can you tell us about the process and the materials you used?
The artwork for ‘Christmas Berries’ was hand-painted in gouache, a lovely medium I’ve enjoyed working with recently.

I was provided information of the upcoming scent, described as ‘deep, warm and rich of berries’. The desire was for something naturalistic, and traditional – in a Christmas sense. A base illustration was made for an abundance of berries and hand-painted to the scale of one of the larger products, then digitally cleaned up for print. Further insight on the process can be seen as documented on my instagram @shannlarssondesign.

What are you working on at the moment?
Expanding into exciting projects and pursuing my career as an artist & designer. I’m also personally exploring animation, to bring a new dimension to the artworks.

What’s your favourite part of Christmas?
Swedish Christmas food
